Beneficiary Visa: Secure Your Family’s Residency in Colombia

Essential Guide for Spouses, Partners, and Dependent Children of Principal Visa Holders

  • Applicable To: The spouse, permanent partner, and children under the age of 25 who are economically dependent on the principal visa holder, or those over 25 who present a duly certified disability preventing economic independence.


  • Duration: The beneficiary visa cannot exceed the duration of the visa held by the principal visa holder.


  • Specific Requirements:

    • Copy of Principal Visa: Copy of the current visa of the principal visa holder from whom the beneficiary wishes to obtain the visa.


    • Proof of Relationship:

      • Marriage Certificate or Birth Certificate: Copy of the marriage certificate or birth certificate that certifies the relationship or family link with the principal visa holder. These documents must be properly apostilled, legalized, and translated into Spanish if they are in another language.


    • Written Request from Principal Visa Holder: Written communication from the principal visa holder requesting the beneficiary visa and declaring economic dependency and responsibility for the beneficiary's travel and/or stay expenses in the national territory, including health coverage services.


    • Proof of Financial Responsibility: The principal visa holder must demonstrate, through bank statements for the last 6 months or employment certification, that they have sufficient income to assume financial responsibility for their beneficiaries.


  • Allows to Work in Colombia?: No, the beneficiary visa does not permit the holder to work in Colombia.


  • Processing Time: Generally, from 2 to 5 weeks, but it may vary depending on the specific circumstances of each application.


  • Application Location: Can be applied for from within Colombia or from the applicant's country of residence or nationality.


  • Relevant Aspects and Frequently Asked Questions:

    • Document Requirements: The proof of relationship (marriage certificate or birth certificate) must be apostilled, legalized, and translated into Spanish if they are in another language.

    • Automatic Termination: The beneficiary visa automatically expires when the beneficiary child turns 25, if they cease to be economically dependent on the principal visa holder before this age, or if the principal visa holder's visa is canceled or expires prematurely according to the stipulations of this Resolution.


  • Government Fees for Visa Application:

    • Visa Study Fee: $54.92 USD or €42.25 EUR

    • Visa Issuance Fee: It depends.

      • If the main visa holder has a V-type visa, the fee is $132 USD or €101.40 EUR.

      • If they have an M-type visa, the fee is $195.40 USD or €149.98 EUR.

      • If they have an R-type visa, the fee is $175.33 USD or €135.19 EUR.
